CBT & DBT
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:
-
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a well-established, highly effective, and lasting treatment used to treat a wide range of issues in a person’s life.
-
This therapy type focuses on challenging negative thoughts and creating skills to cope with stressful situations and challenges in life.
-
The idea behind CBT is that individuals sometimes have negative thoughts that can lead to negative actions and feelings. CBT seeks to assist these individuals to challenge these negative thoughts and reframe the issues in their lives.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy:
DBT uses a combination of mindfulness and DBT skills to assist the patient. Often a patient will join a group. That group will have rules that must be followed.
DBT focuses on the opposite, but complimentary, ideas of acceptance and change. In order for it to be successful, patients must learn to accept their problems. Only then can they seek to change. The idea is to stop judging ourselves and others and finding something to blame. This moves thinking away from “all or nothing.”
For DBT to work expect to:
• Attend all sessions
• Work with your therapist
• Do any homework assigned by your therapist
• Practice mindfulness and the behaviors learned during the sessions.
Remember, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is focused on both acceptance and change. Both must occur for the therapy to be successful. DBT can help you survive crisis situations, accept reality, and stop suffering.
How it Works:
CBT focuses on identifying, understanding, and changing
thinking and behavior patterns that help change the way you feel.
Benefits are usually seen in 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual.
CBT helps to empower you while stress decreases anxiety
CBT provides a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving.
How it Helps:
Learn to control your thinking
Maintain a sense of control and
self-confidence
Learn coping skills that are
helpful throughout life
