Common Insurance Words
Copay: A set amount of money your insurance says you have to pay at each visit. Most, but not all, plans that require a copay do not require you to pay your deductible first.
Coinsurance: A percentage of the cost of an office visit that your insurance requires you to pay. Typically coinsurances are owed only after your deductible is met.
Deductible: An amount of money set by your insurance that sometimes need to be met before insurance begins to pay the provider. If you owe your deductible, you will need to pay for the office visits until the deductible is met.
Out-of-pocket Maximum: An amount of money, often double your deductible, that your insurance requires you to pay. When this is met, your insurance often covers you in full.
